about

This incarnation, this re-issue, this once more with feeling, this here we go again is all Willem’s fault.
Willem Moller, Bill to some. Suddenly took it upon himself to re-mix and re-produce the recordings from the original Sharp Street Studios in Kensington. Boom. In January 2022. And boom! vastly different mixes and sound and general production, like properly lekker man. Clean and crisp and fresh. Worth a last hoorah…
Of course, Bill’s new mastery brought some sadness with it. Dennis Deranged passed on soon after we released this the first time, and to hear Den’s at times mad sonic screams and then gently melodic tastefulness all over again was not easy at first. If you listen to “Karoo” you’ll easily picture him alone in the booth, arm flailing, having the time of his life…But the bittersweet is really outweighed by the gorgeous playing, of course. And so, in truth this re-issue is as much a tribute to Den as it is anything else. One of the Joburg Jol’s most underrated.
Perhaps the biggest shock was realising that the original recordings were made twenty years ago. Jesus! What the fuck happened? Well, to The Hips, lots: after Dennis died we added and subtracted and added again, Andrew disappeared to Cape Town, Paolo left, Ivor Back pulled in on drums, then Harvey Roberts our old mucker from The Dynamics bought some tenor sax and a bit of harmony, Ivor left, Kevin O’Grady pulled in, James Donaldson, Andrew’s younger boet, of Zen Arcade and Jim Neversink became a fixture on guitar, Jana came with Kevin and added some sexy backing vocals, and Julian Thomas, son of another sadly departed mucker, Jeremy Thomas, arrived with a sweet trumpet; and from about 2010 until the end of 2016 The Hips were a gig band, played all over the place, some couple few festivals and a lot of bars – Mieliepop, The Radium, The Bohemian. Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, The Radium, Melville, Clarens, The Radium, and a legendary tour with the also sadly departed Herbie Parkin and his Swedish band Tuckers Lille Kapel.. we had a jol.
The songs from this Sharp Street recording were always the backbone of our sets, snuggled in nicely alongside the new material we continued to write. The intervening period has been a grand twenty years – some of us got married, some died, some of us got better at life and some of us just got better…well, not really. We’ve added a few bonus bits of other recordings we did over the years, just for mos, and also perspective…. Peace out brothers and sisters.
